They also spoke about the possibility of the United States approving new sanctions on Russia.

On Monday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke with the White House’s special representative for Ukraine, retired Gen. Keith Kellogg, about the possibility of the United States approving new sanctions on Russia and sending additional weapons to Ukraine, which would be paid for with European funds.

“We discussed the path to peace and what we can practically do together to bring it closer. This includes strengthening Ukraine’s air defense, joint production and procurement of defensive weapons in cooperation with Europe,” Zelensky stated.

The Ukrainian president also mentioned “sanctions against Russia and those who assist it” as one of the actions through which the U.S. can help end the war.

“We have hope in U.S. leadership, because it’s clear that Moscow will never stop unless its unreasonable ambitions are checked by force,” Zelensky said.

He also thanked Kellogg for visiting Ukraine and expressed appreciation for the “important signs of support and positive decisions for both countries” that U.S. President Donald Trump has made public in recent days.

Kellogg arrived in Kyiv to spend the week in Ukraine and meet with local leaders. His visit comes after Trump confirmed he would send Patriot missile defense systems to Ukraine, which will be paid for by several European countries.

On Sunday, Trump announced he would send Patriot missile interceptor systems to Ukraine, but said the European Union would pay for them—a move expected to be finalized Monday during his meeting with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte.

“I haven’t agreed on the number yet, but they’ll get some because they need protection. But the EU is paying for it. We’re not paying anything, but we’ll send them. It’s going to be a business deal for us, and we’ll send Patriots,” Trump told reporters.
